Frequently Asked Questions

DOT® Grommets and Washers

Why use Rolled Rim Grommets and Spur Washers?

Rolled rim grommets and spur washers are made of thicker gauge brass for robust construction. Interlocking washer teeth grasp material tightly for premium security. Ideal for applications under stress and tension or experiencing movement.

What are the three types of sheet metal washers and how are each best used?

Plain Washers are used as basic reinforcement to provide support for the grommet setting in the application material.
Tooth Washers provide a firmer, tighter grip, particularly when used on woven material. Matching plain washers in size, each tooth washer has five equally spaced teeth to better grip application material.
Neck Washers reinforce the hole in a barrel-to-barrel setting and facilitate automatic feed setting for high-volume production.

What are the benefits of a tooth washer?

Tooth washers provide a firmer, tighter grip on the material, and the all non-ferrous construction makes the product rust resistant.

DOT® Durable

What are the components of a DOT Durable snap?

A DOT Durable snap consists of a cap and socket (that form the female half when assembled), and a stud and post (that form the male half when assembled).

Why are DOT Durable caps available in different length options?

DOT Durable caps come in various lengths for a firm grip when attaching to specific thicknesses of fabric, canvas or vinyl materials.

Why are posts available in different overall heights?

DOT Durable posts are available in various heights according to the application material thickness.

Are DOT Durable caps self-piercing, and why is that an important product feature?

Yes. Along with the sharpness of the barrel, the thick brass material of the cap eyelet allows for ease in piercing standard thicknesses of many types of industrial fabrics. This feature alleviates the need to pre-punch holes, thereby reducing attaching time. However, some industrial fabric thicknesses will require pre-punching.

What are Mariner Caps?

Mariner Caps have a durable plastic shell that reduces wear and is UV stabilized to prevent fading. Standard colors to match a variety of marine and awning fabrics are available.

What lengths of screw studs are available?

Screw studs are available in 3/16”, 3/8”, 7/16” and 5/8”.

Are there standards or recommendations for lubricating DOT sockets?

While there are no set standards, warm soapy water, cotton stick swabs and clean towels are all part of a good maintenance tool kit.

DOT® Baby Durable

What are the chief differences between DOT Durable and DOT Baby Durable?

DOT Baby Durable is a smaller version of DOT Durable with a limited product range.

Are DOT Baby Durable Caps self-piercing?

Are there options in the length of the eyelet barrel for DOT Baby Durable caps?

Yes, two barrel lengths (.126” and .185”) are available.

Pull-the-DOT®

Why is Pull-the-DOT stamped on the face of the Pull-the-DOT caps?

Embossing the front shell of the Pull-the-DOT caps with the brand name helps to differentiate the product from the standard DOT Durable caps.

Are the Pull-the-DOT caps self-piercing?

Is it difficult to snap a Pull-the-DOT socket to the stud? What is the best method to snap the socket and stud together?

The best method to snap the socket and stud together is to place the tabbed side of the socket on the stud and roll the snap forward, closing it.

Lift-the-DOT®

What are Lift-the-DOT fasteners?

Lift-the-DOT fasteners are a directional fastener system. Similar to Pull-the-DOT fasteners, Lift-the-DOT fasteners lock on three sides, only releasing on the fourth.

Common Sense®

What are the key features and benefits of Common Sense fasteners?

Heavy-duty and non-ferrous construction means that Common Sense fasteners resist rust. As well, the tensioned pin and spring action construction creates a positive lock, preventing the fastener from working loose with vibration.

What choices of turn button styles are available for Common Sense products?

There are four different styles of turn buttons offered: turn button with eyelet, turn button with 2 screw base, turn button with legs, and a turn button with a screw.
